Rockville Centre native Crystal Dunn receives soccer honors

Front Row Soccer, a website that reports on soccer leagues in the New York metropolitan area, named Rockville Centre native Crystal Dunn “Personality of the Year” and “Women’s Pro Player of the Year” for 2019.

“Crystal Dunn is someone you don’t want to say that she cannot accomplish a particular task because there’s a pretty good chance that she’ll prove you wrong,” Front Row Soccer editor Michael Lewis wrote in his column announcing the award.

Dunn, 27, entered the limelight nationwide in July 2019 when she and Team USA won the 2019 FIFA World Cup against the Netherlands, defeating them 2-0 in Lyon, France.

The South Side High School alumna helped lead the Lady Cyclones to state championships in 2006, 2007 and 2009. She also played on Rockville Centre Power, and Albertson Soccer Club in her early years.

At the World Cup, she played a vital role shutdown defense against “some of the most dangerous forwards in the world,” Lewis wrote, and Team USA allowed only three goals in seven games.

Dunn, one of seven defenders named to the squad and wearing No. 19, was part of the U.S. team that won the 2012 FIFA under-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan. She went on to play for the U.S. Women’s National Team the following year, and, since 2013, has scored 24 goals for the squad in 90 international appearances.
